Great musicianship today goes beyond playing great concerts. Rather than letting Lucy walk away, let’s seize the opportunity to relate our inner-most musical selves using our audiences’ words. Sometimes just singing a favorite phrase related to the audience will work. Let us likewise get beyond dumbing down to create strong access points— to validate our traditional concerts after validating their traditions. The music can speak for itself, esp. if played with clear musical phrasing. For newcomers, they need and deserve a good preface. And some veterans will enjoy it too.
